Areas of Responsibility
In partnership with Area Health Services and relevant clinical groups, NSW ITIM is responsible for:
- Developing and implementing trauma system processes and clinical practice guidelines as standards of trauma care in NSW
- Monitoring the trauma system and its components and reporting to the Director General through the Chief Health Officer to ensure that Area Health Services support the standard of care as outlined in the State Trauma Plan
- Facilitating the State-wide coordination of Trauma Services, in particular the Urban-Rural linkages
- Stimulating clinical involvement in the promotion of injury prevention initiatives in the community
- Managing a state-wide injury data collection process. This includes a Trauma Minimum Data Set
- Conducting and promoting research into the causation, prevention, treatment and outcome of injury
- Promoting and facilitating education in trauma care to meet the needs of health care providers in NSW
- Establishing partnerships with relevant stake holder agencies, such as the Police and Roads and Traffic Authority, to foster a whole of government approach to trauma and injury management in NSW
- Exploring funding options to increase funds from external sources to assist with trauma research, implementation of best practice guidelines and injury prevention programs
- Providing policy advice to the Director General on areas for improvement within the trauma system, on the accreditation of trauma services in partnership with the professional colleges and the regionalisation of trauma services within NSW.
