Committees

Six key NSW ITIM Committees have been created with diverse cross clinical membership to oversee and review the NSW Trauma System.

1. The Pre Hospital Trauma System Committee is responsible for overseeing the functioning of the trauma system relating to the care of the injured patient from the scene of injury until treatment at a definitive care hospital. This is achieved through the identification of issues within the pre hospital trauma system and the injury management process that need to be addressed to improve patient care. Committee representation includes Medical Retrieval Services, Ambulance Service of NSW, NSW Trauma Services and Rural Emergency and Critical Care Services.

2. The Trauma Services Committee has a role to improve care of the injured patient in NSW by identifying issues within both the trauma system and the injury management process that need to be addressed. Representation includes Trauma Directors, Trauma Nurse Coordinators, NSW ITIM and NSW Health.

3. The Education and Research Committee's aim is to promote and develop trauma education programs and identify research initiatives for trauma clinicians and other stakeholders. Representation includes NSW Trauma Services, Retrieval Services, Ambulance Service of NSW and the Institute of Medical Education and Training of NSW (IMET).

4. The Allied Health and Rehabilitation Committee is comprised of representatives from a wide range of specialty allied health and rehabilitation groups with the aim of improving allied health and rehabilitation links with the trauma services through such activities as the coordination of the annual Allied Health and Rehabilitation Trauma seminar.

5. The Trauma Death Review Committee is multidisciplinary with metropolitan and rural representation from prehospital, trauma services, intensive care, emergency medicine, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, forensic pathology, Roads and Traffic Authority, Police, NSW Department of Health and NSW ITIM. Trauma system related performance issues are reviewed at this committee according to the State Trauma Plan.

6. The Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee is a group of clinicians that are involved in the care of trauma patients. The clinicians in the committee are from varied clinical backgrounds and provide expert advice regarding the adult trauma clinical practice guidelines that NSW ITIM is developing. The committee is also responsible for the ongoing review of the guidelines to ensure they include current evidenced based best practice.

Associated committees which are supported by NSW ITIM include:

1. Trauma Network Consortium whose membership represents Trauma Data Managers and Trauma Coordinators.

2. Paediatric Trauma Care Network Committee which has representation from Sydney Children's Hospital, John Hunter Children's Hospitals, The Children's Hospital at Westmead and the NSW Newborn and Paediatric Emergency Transport Service (NETS).

3. Trauma Information Management Group.
