Canadian CT Head Rule - Decision Instrument
"The Canadian CT Head Rule for patients with minor head injury" by Stiell et al was published in The Lancet, (Full text link to article for CIAP users).
Steill et al aimed to prospectively derive a decision rule for the use of CT in patients with minor head injury. 3121 consecutive patients were enrolled across ten Canadian institutions with a GCS 13-15 following a blunt head injury.
The decision rule asked seven simple questions to identify patients at high risk or requiring neurosurgical intervention and patients at medium risk of brain injury on CT.
The potential implications of using the Canadian CT Head Rule included standardised and improved patient care and a reduction in the use of CT for this patient group.
