NSW Methylprednisolone Protocol

Methylprednisolone is a high dose steroid. It's controversial use in the initial management of acute spinal cord injury is with the aim of reducing the swelling at the level of the injury to the spinal cord, therefore preventing a rise in the level of injury.

The NSW Statewide Spinal Cord Injury Service (SSCIS) Methylprednisolone protocol is supported by the spinal injuries units in NSW. Although the use of Methylprednisolone remains controversial, where local clinical practice supports it use, the SSCIS protocol should be used.

See the link below for a discussion on the use of Methylprednisolone, indications for its use and administration protocol.
