The Alfred Spinal Clearance Management Protocol

From 2004 to 2006, the study entitled "Optimisation of patient management through expediting the spinal clearance process in the major trauma patient" was conducted at The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne. The study aimed to ascertain the effect of an extensive and widely available protocol, and associated education, on the time to spinal clearance and the complications of patient immobilisation.

As a component of the study, The Alfred Spinal Clearance Management Protocol was developed, and has been disseminated to all Victorian State Trauma Centres by the Victorian Trauma Foundation, for utilisation as required. The 48-page document contains definitions, time goals, spinal clearance flow charts, guidelines for documentation and nursing care, and cervical collar information.
