NSW Trauma System

The NSW Institute of Trauma & Injury Management, as part of the NSW Health Department and in partnership with the Strategic Development Division and Statewide Services Development Branch, oversees the State Trauma System.

The trauma system is made up of:

  • Out of Hospital - Ambulance bypass to designated trauma hospitals, and the early notification of severe trauma in Rural NSW - (NSW Ambulance Protocol 4) and the NSW Medical Retrieval Unit
  • Hospitals - A three tiered level of care within the greater metropolitan area and the rural areas of the state provided by Major Trauma Services, Regional Trauma Services and Urban Trauma Services, Rural Referral Trauma Services and Rural Designated Protocol 4 and Non-designated Protocol 4 Trauma Services
  • State-wide Specialist Services - Spinal Cord Injury, Severe Burn Injury and Brain Injury Rehabilitation.
